LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis), approved by the FDA in the 1990’s, has become an increasingly popular way to correct vision by surgically altering the shape of the eye, thus leaving patients virtually “glasses-free”.
Individuals who had previous LASIK, or other refractive surgery, may now be approaching cataract age. In a patient who has had LASIK, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) or RK (Radial Keratotomy), the shape of the cornea and its focusing power have been deliberately altered. This altered state presents unique challenges for the refractive cataract surgeon because the most appropriate power of the intraocular lens implant can be difficult to measure accurately. If the refractive surgeon were to treat a post-LASIK patient following the normal protocol for any other patient, the results could be quite off-target, requiring either more surgery, a thick pair of glasses or contact lenses.
Fortunately, Eyesight uses the AdvancedOptiWave Refractive Analysis (ORA) technology system, which enables our surgeons to take more accurate “real-time” measurements immediately after your cataract has been removed, right in the operating room. These precise measurements give our surgeons a greater level of predictability and confidence, allowing our post-refractive surgery patients the optimized results that they deserve.
