As you may already know, Multifocal lens implants are just one type of premium lens implant that can be used in cataract surgery. These lens implants are in fact multifocal and can assist with vision at multiple distances where a monodical implants correct vision at only one distance. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens enables cataract patients to see objects that are up close as well as those that are far away, without the need for contacts or eyeglasses. Many patients see this visual freedom as a major advantage. The cataract surgeons at Eyesight in Portsmouth aim to provide only the best options in premium lens implant cataract surgery.
By replacing the natural lens that is clouded over with cataracts, the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens also removes all cataract symptoms such as blurry vision, halos, and faded colors. In addition, the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens was designed using Wavefront™ technology similar to that which is used in CustomVue™ Individualized Laser Vision Correction. This advanced technology created an extremely accurate multifocal intraocular lens that was designed to address vision problems caused by an irregular cornea.
The surgical process for premium lens implants is much the same as basic cataract surgery. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens is inserted through a tiny incision in the eye during a two-part procedure. First, the crystalline lens is broken up using ultrasonic waves. The crystalline lens is the part of the eye behind the cornea that can thicken over time and become cloudy, forming cataracts that obstruct vision. During the procedure, the unhealthy crystalline lens is broken up into minute fragments and the tiny pieces are then vacuumed away.
Next, the crystalline lens is replaced with the TECNIS™ Multifocal IOL. The intraocular lens is inserted through the same tiny incision in the eye using a specialized insertion tool. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens is rolled up as it is inserted, but once in the eye the lens unfolds into its proper position. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens can replace the natural lens of the eye and correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness, all in one convenient, painless procedure with a minimal recovery period.
