Although we will employ everything we can to treat
your AMD, some degree of vision loss may be inevitable.
Our ultimate goal is to preserve functional vision
as long as it is possible. Preserving enough vision
to allow continuance of those visual tasks which
are important to you is why we do what we do. Not
only are treatments such as Visudyne, triamcinolone
acetonide, and antioxidants important to preserve
abilities to read, drive and watch television, but
vision rehabilitation also is critical for success.
Vision
rehabilitation involves maximizing your visual
abilities despite whatever level of vision loss you
may have incurred. Whether it is as simple as fitting
you for stronger reading glasses, instruction in
the use of adequate illumination and magnification,
or the employment of closed-circuit TV (CCTV) systems,
our low vision rehabilitation team will personalize
the solution to the patient. Early identification
of those patients with AMD who have visual difficulties
is often a challenge, yet success is often greater
in those patients in whom visual rehabilitation
is commenced at an early stage of AMD.
For those patients
with advanced vision loss, appropriate referrals
to the proper agencies that may be helpful can
easily be arranged by our team.
